Extra Assistance

What it should do
Add a tabbed index to the bottom of the extras and backdrop applications. Tapping the tabs gives quick access to Extras drawer contents.

Why is it useful
Once Newtons are loaded with a lot of packages, the display of extras drawers is significantly slowed. Drawers with large numbers of items take longer to display each page which is compouned when the user has to scroll down to the bottom of a drawer many pages long. This extension would alow the user to go directly to the relevant page, and filter out packages from the list according to defined parameters.

[NOTE - Extras Plus - by Stand Alone software provides letter based tabs in extras that achieves a similar result. It adds an index to Extras, speeds up extras display (with icons off), and adds other nice functions]

Description
Tabs are added above the button bar in extras and the backdrop, similar to NuBackdrop. Two approaches are suggested

= EITHER =

      Add user definable tabs that access the associated extras folder - just like NuBackdrop (see picture)

Note the user definable extras tabs at the bottom of the backdrop (the arrows at the right scroll this list left/right).
In this picture the button bar is absent (collapsed), but the bar normally sits beneath the tabs.

= OR =

      Add an tabbed index (similar to Freezeman) to the bottom of the backdrop & extras to give quick access to Extras drawers.

        This would allow you to select additional parameters such as
            - the drawers to display (extensions, untitled, all icons, etc)
            - the stores to display
            - optionally limit the display to only those beginning with the chosen letter
            - optionally limit the display depending on the freeze/thaw properties of the contents

        A screen mock-up is shown to illustrate the idea -

    Explanation:

        * All Icons
           A pop-up list of extras drawers (Untitled/extensions/All icons/etc) - used to select the desired drawer before extras is opened.

        * Index tabs
           Tapping on these opens the drawer starting at the tapped letter (remember tapping twice on "AB" will select "B". Similarly tapping thrice on "ABC" will select C.
            If the buttons need to be bigger, space can be saved by using tabs with 3 letters in them, rather than 2 (eg. "ABC", "DEF", etc)

        * Limit button
           A toggle button that will show only the items starting with the selected letter in the drawer (as compared to showing all items, but starting at the page with the selected letter)

        * Frozen button
           A toggle button that includes/excludes Frozen items from the display

        * Internal
           A pop-up list that lets you limit the display to particular stores (eg external cards etc).
           If more space is required, this can be included at the bottom of the "All icons" list, similar to the way that extras allows you to do it (via the pop-up list at the top of the extras drawer).

    If you want all items displayed in a drawer (eg extras) then you woul select extras (in the "all icons" pop-up),
        make sure that the "Limit" and "Frozen" buttons were off, and "All stores" was selected in the "Internal" menu

    It would be nice if the tabs stayed in place in other applications. This would be similar to the tab display in NuBackdrop.

    It might be possible to hide packages that are part of a Freezeman set - only the Freezeman icon would be shown - this would allow groups of packages to be essentrially joined together.

      Alternatively, it's possible to include this extras Assitance function as part of Avis backdrop.
        However, it will add to the size of Avis, and the function is only really useful for those with a lot of storage space and many packages
